Coaching: What Is It and How Does It Work?

Updated: Jul 16

What is coaching?

Coaching is a conversational process between a professional coach and a mentee to work on the latter's objectives. It is a method that focuses on specialized training and teaching new skills. This process can be made up of one or more conversations where the mentee identifies several preconceived ideas that prevent them from achieving their goals as well as what skills and resources they have to achieve that goal.

When should the coaching process start?

When coaching individuals, we focus on personal challenges.

Some examples are:

  • The development of team leading skills

  • Enhancing personal skills to better perform your assigned role within an organization

  • Evolving your role within your organization

  • Strengthening ties with your team to generate stronger work environments

  • More quickly assuming and accepting changes in the work environment

  • Improving your skills as a changemaker

  • Improving your skills to manage a project

How does the coaching process work?

First, the mentee expresses the need or desire to begin the coaching process.

It is essential to establish trust between the coach and the mentee to create a safe space where vulnerability is accepted and learning is possible. If trust is not felt, it may be wise to change coaches.

In general, a few individual meetings of about 60/90 minutes are held between the coach and mentee. It is up to the coach's discretion whether to schedule two/three meetings in a row or to progress one meeting at a time.

In each meeting a goal is proposed, the mentee decides on which topic to focus on and then explores the beliefs, preconceptions, judgments that prevent them from getting to where they want to be. The meeting often ends with a target goal accompanied by concrete steps that one could take towards achieving that goal.

The role of the coach is to witness the decisions the mentee makes during the process, connect thoughts, generate ideas, and provide a sounding board for ideas. The coach should not make decisions for the mentee or give discrete advice on what to do.

What should I expect from the coaching process?

The identification of beliefs and judgments that prevent you from achieving your goals.

The connection of your skills to your existing resources (internal or external) that can bring you closer to your goals. The reevaluation of who you are.

The generation of concrete changes in your decisions and actions.
